I've had a cel for a few weeks related to my front o2 sensor. Not wanting to go and drop a hundo on a new one I have been tracking down any possible problems. While pulling up my passenger carpet a bit to get to things, two things caught my eye.

First is this cable connector that had the exposed end in a plastic bag. No idea what it is.

Kinja'd!!!

just above that was another wiring harness but it had a couple of wires clipped. For all I know my car has been running great ever since I had it but if anyone knows what these are for I do love knowledge. For the cut wires it's the red double wire( dunno what they are called)

So diagnostics of some sort? That wouldn't be for tuning would it?

Like others have said: mini serial. It used to be the standard for PC mice, before PS/2 dominated and before USB. My lawn: please to be getting off.

It may be set up to communicate with a variant of the RS-232 standard. Which means, actively monkeying with stuff will need a nerd, but there are scanners out there that will interface with that no probbo.

Maybe it had/has an aftermarket ecu or piggyback ecu.

Mini serial is basically the USB of the early 90s, so... Maybe

It's for using your car as a mouse.

Kinja'd!!!

Just plug it into your 486 with Windows 3.1

I believe that is a Subaru diagnostic port. I think Subaru has equipment than can plug into that port for a direct engine control unit, or body control unit connection... and there may be a corresponding plug in there somewhere that may socket into that, and put it into a diagnostic mode (acts like a circuit closing jumper), even without the subaru diagnostic computer connected.

I am not sure that there is much you could do with it, without very specific proprietary software, even if you have the cable adapter to hook it up to a computer.

I am not 1000% sure on it... but I think that is somewhat accurate information.

I know that my car has electrical connectors in the dash for options it doesn't have, it could be the same thing with you.

Always ALWAYS post what kind of car it is. Helps us diagnose.

I figured not to touch it, unless it was for my laser firer

Nope, I had it tuned a while ago and the guy never mentioned anything about there being a piggyback or an aftermarket. Maybe there used to be? That's kind of frightening. But over the two years or so with the car I have had no issues. If it ain't broke don't fix it right?

Yup. Forgot about that, it's an 03 WRX

Ooooo, I have Subie questions too. I'm about to replace the head gaskets in my 2002 outback with an EJ251. I'm going to go with fel-pro PermaTorque gaskets. Anybody have any experience with them (positive or negative)?

I'm of no help. Somehow in my 5 years of owning a 99 legacy 2.5 and the 2 years with my 03 wrx I have blown no headgaskets. And haven't really felt like trying to replace them for the fun of it

db9 connector. It could be for anything, but its not used in production cars. Either the PO was a dipshit, or the car was used for some kind of testing maybe.

Kinja'd!!! Mattbob > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

its generic db9, they are not necessarily a serial (read: rs232) connection! In automotive testing, they are used a lot of times to access the CAN bus.

nope nope nope. You are assuming a protocol based on the connector. It is a standard db-9 connector (subminiature 9 pin). They are used a lot as generic data connections in automotive testing. Lots of times used to connect to the CAN bus.

Interesting - wasn't familiar with CAN bus. Still, the principle is the same: easy-ish to address on the hardware side, but likely to require hardware the home user is unlikely to have and specialized software.

yeah, CAN tools are very expensive. If that's what its hooked to, it might be better just to get rid of the connector all together and not worry about it.

After searching NASIOC, it's used for data logging in some odd way.

"You get the DB9 Serial Connector from Radio Shack.
The pinout is readily available, you *SOLDER* the UEGO wires to the corresponding pins on the DB9 connector. Do not crimp.
Then, you buy a Serial —> USB adapter online. Done.
All you have to do now is hook up your tactrix and yourUSB connectorfrom the UEGO and in Romraider choose the plugin. It will have a setting for the COM port just like the tactrix cable, choose the correct COM that coincides with yourUEGO.
It's not that hard really."

Looked all through the wiring section of the FSM, http://www.ej207.com/files/Subaru%2… but could not find a single 9-pin or likely connector in that area. As you and others mentioned, sure seems like a DIY add-on to access data and/or CAN bus. You could probably cross reference the schematic first hand (I couldn't see the wire colors and orientation in the photo) if you wanted to find out what the port might offer you. Could be handy if someone's already put in a nice data port for you. Of course, the work is a bit suspect. Any one who just cuts wires and leaves them that way is cutting corners at best.
